Probate Filing Fees

Filing TypeFee
Formal Administration
Standard probate for larger estates
$230
Small Estate Affidavit
For estates under threshold (no court filing needed)
$41

Note: Tennessee imposes no state probate tax measured against estate value. Under the statewide statutory clerk fee schedule (Tenn. Code Ann. 8-21-401), the clerk charges a flat $230 to open and close a full estate (other than a small estate) and $41 to file a small estate petition for limited letters. Williamson County publishes its own civil-and-probate court-cost schedule through the Chancery Court Clerk and Master (williamsonchancery.org), and like other general-law Tennessee counties adds local litigation taxes, data-entry fees, publication/notice costs, and certified-copy charges on top of the statutory base, so the practical all-in opening cost is higher (commonly in the ~$300-$345 range) and varies. Verify the current local add-on amounts on the Williamson County Chancery Court cost schedule before relying on a figure.

Records portal

Use this county-linked source to check live court-record information when available. Search results may not include every probate record.

Searchable, completeness not guaranteed

The Tennessee Public Court Records System (TnCIS) provides statewide public case-information search for participating trial courts (circuit, chancery/clerk and master, general sessions, and probate). Not every county or court participates, records are not complete, and document images are generally not available. Confirm case details with the local clerk.
