Devisee
A person who receives real estate (or, in modern usage, any gift) under a will.
What Devisee means in an estate
Historically a devisee inherited real property under a will, while a legatee received personal property; many modern statutes use devisee for anyone taking under a will. A devisee is a chosen beneficiary, distinct from an heir who inherits by default when there is no will.
How this works in your state
The concept is national, but the forms, procedure names, thresholds, and filing practice vary by state. Open your state glossary and guides to see how devisee is handled where the estate is being settled.
