Domicile
A person's permanent legal home.
What Domicile means in an estate
Domicile is where someone intends to make their permanent home and to return to when they are away. It generally decides which state's law governs the estate and where probate opens. A person can have only one domicile at a time, even if they own property in several states and spend months in each.
How this works in your state
The concept is national, but the forms, procedure names, thresholds, and filing practice vary by state. Open your state glossary and guides to see how domicile is handled where the estate is being settled.
