Trustee
The person or institution that holds and manages trust property for the beneficiaries.
What Trustee means in an estate
The trustee is a fiduciary: they must follow the trust document, invest prudently, keep trust property separate from their own, keep records, treat beneficiaries impartially, and never self-deal. With a revocable living trust the settlor is usually their own trustee while alive, and the named successor trustee takes over at death or incapacity. That handoff is what lets trust assets pass without probate.
How this works in your state
The concept is national, but the forms, procedure names, thresholds, and filing practice vary by state. Open your state glossary and guides to see how trustee is handled where the estate is being settled.
