Executor

The person named in a will to handle the estate.

Also known as: Personal Representative, Executrix (female, historical).

What Executor means in an estate

The executor is nominated in the will, but they have no authority until the court appoints them and issues letters. If the named executor cannot or will not serve, an alternate named in the will steps in, or the court appoints someone else. Many states use 'personal representative' as the umbrella term covering both executors and administrators.

How this works in your state

The concept is national, but the forms, procedure names, thresholds, and filing practice vary by state. Open your state glossary and guides to see how executor is handled where the estate is being settled.
