Pro Se

Handling a legal matter yourself, without hiring a lawyer.

What Pro Se means in an estate

Pro se (also called self-represented) means acting as executor or filing a probate case without an attorney. Many simpler estates are settled pro se, especially small-estate and uncontested paths. Whether an executor is allowed to proceed without a lawyer, and for which kinds of cases, varies by state, and some courts require a lawyer once a formal estate is opened.
